Moderated by the Minister of Livestock of Uruguay, Fernando Mattos, the ministers who participated in the conference discussed the actions being developed to improve the sector's contribution to sustainability and exchanged necessary coordination.
The ministerial panel entitled "Policy Framework for the Sustainable Transformation of Livestock", where the Minister of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries of Uruguay, Fernando Mattos, acted as Chair, called on the authorities to discuss the fundamental issue, addressing the matter in a comprehensive manner.
Yesterday, during the opening of this event, the Ministers of Livestock, Environment, Finance and the President of the Republic left some key messages. The success of sustainable development is that the portfolios of the Executive Branch are aligned in long-term policies that transcend governments. This is the key to sustainable livestock development.
The first block was attended by the Minister of Agriculture and Livestock of Paraguay Carlos Giménez, the Minister of Agriculture of Chile Esteban Valenzuela, the Secretary of Agriculture of Argentina Sergio Iraeta, the Minister of Agriculture of Guyana Zulfikar Mustapha, who accompanied us virtually during this block, and the Director of FAO Thanawat Tiensin, who reinforced in all his speeches that livestock is the solution.
How to communicate to the rest of the world and to consumers that we are in favor of sustainability and that we are in a position to maintain the resources for new generations is a job in itself, commented the Argentinean minister, citing the example of Uruguay as a model of care for rodeos in all their dimensions.
The Secretary of Chile asked FAO to contribute to promoting concrete actions to resolve the necessary transformations.
The second panel, moderated by Mattos, included Carlos Favaro, Minister of Agriculture and Livestock of Brazil; Maynor Estrada, Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Food of Guatemala; Arturo Macosay, Coordinator of Agriculture and Rural Development of Mexico (online); and Lloyd Day, Deputy Director General of the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA).
In the case of Brazil, it was recalled that this country will host the next COP and that agricultural issues need to be included in biodiversity, for coordination and discussion by world leaders.
Favaro spoke of the importance of the women and men who are called upon to produce food. The demands will be greater because there will be more people in the world to feed and must be connected to the responsibility with the environment.
Respect for environmental assets are people, land, genetic evolution and climate. Without rain, it is not possible to produce and these resources belong to us and we have the responsibility to take care of them, said the Brazilian minister.
In this conference there are so many nations that have the same concern and everything that is being done to show the world, it is important to make it heard from the different voices, he added. Because it is about respect. All countries are willing to discuss our way of producing and explaining the strategy, each one with its own particularity, respecting the environment and achieving happiness for all, concluded the Brazilian minister.
The opening will be in charge of the President of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay Luis Lacalle Pou, the Director-General of FAO Qu Dongyu, FAO's highest authority, the Assistant Director-General and FAO Regional Representative Mario Lubetkin.
Three Uruguayan government ministers will participate in the opening ceremony: Robert Bouvier, Minister of Environment, Azucena Arbeleche, Minister of Economy and Finance, and Fernando Mattos, Minister of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries. There will also be representatives on the panels from IICA, FAO, members of the diplomatic corps, the private sector and the public sector.
More than 700 people are expected to participate.
The head of INAC said that the Conference is a great opportunity to show the world the collaborative role of Uruguay, not only for this organization to bring together so many valuable voices around livestock sustainability but to appreciate the Uruguayan production system and therefore there will be a field day the day before for guests and authorities.
